Understanding Basic Blogging Terms for Your Business
Now that blogs have become so popular and almost the norm when setting up an online business, it is important to understand the terminology or vocabulary of a blog.
Once you know these basic terms, you will feel more confident in understanding your blog.
BASIC BLOG/SITE TERMS
1) Domain - This is the URL or web address of your site. Typically online business owners tend to use their names or keywords of their market niche when determining what domain name to choose.
2) Web Host - This is the company that will 'house' (host) your domain. Consider it like a huge virtual file cabinet where your blog will be stored. Once your blog is registered with the hosting company, your computer communicates with the host when you upload posts or edit information.
3) Platform - Your platform is the computer software program which allows you to write or update your posts, add images, videos and so forth. The platform is also what you use to design your site. From choosing the color scheme to the font size will determine the look of your blog.
4) Plug-ins - These are small programs and considered to be the extras that you add to your blog site for specific functions. Examples would be plug-ins for leaving 'comments' under your posts, optimizing your site with SEO, including social media share buttons for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
5) Widgets - Similar to a plug-in, widgets are small applications that will enhance the design and functionality of your blog site. From adding an opt-in box, list of recent posts, list of your categories, and much more to even adding in your own custom text widget.
6) Dashboard - The area you access to orchestrate your entire site. It is your control panel for your blog. It is the main interface where all the coding can be accessed, although I recommend that if you are not familiar with programming codes, let the experts help you out.
So now you know the basic blogging terms. Next time you hear about a cool plug-in, you will know what they are talking about!
